5 Tips On How To Plant Vegetable Gardens For Beginners

Imagine for a minute when your were a kid visiting your grand parents on a beautiful sunny weekend. Your grand parent grabs you by the hand and leads you out into the garden for a freshly ripened tomato. You find the biggest, bright red, plump tomato you have ever seen hanging from the vine. You take a huge bite of it and the juice from the tomato dribbles down your check as the two of you burst into laughter. Look back to that time and imagine the joy of your grand parents that came from planting a vegetable garden. You to can have these same feelings of enjoyment with just a little work and time.

How will you learn to plant your own organic garden? As you read every word in this article you will see how you can learn to plant your own vegetable garden and not have to pay for those overpriced vegetables at your local supermarket.

Planting vegetable gardens can be a very rewarding endeavor, not to mention that it's good for your body because of all the exercise you will get, and the vegetables that you'll get to eat. These days, it's really ideal if you can plant your own vegetables to make sure that they're pesticide free, but a lot of people feel intimidated by the idea of planting vegetable gardens especially in a city.

Traditional Planting Style

The more traditional way of planting vegetables is laying them out in straight, organized lines. Some people prefer to plant alternating rows of different types of vegetables so that when one type of vegetable is about to be harvested, the rows in between them have vegetables that are not yet in season. The soil structure quickly becomes ruined because gardeners have to walk between rows, though.

Bed Planting

A popular way of planting vegetables these days is planting them in beds rather than the traditional rows. The beds have to be small enough in size so that you can reach into it and pull out the weeds that will grow among your plants. Beds can also be raised a bit higher off the ground so that the heat will be kept inside longer during cold weather. It also makes for a good drainage system around the beds.

Small Space Planting

For people who have smaller living spaces (especially those who live in the city), vegetables and herbs can grow in plant boxes and containers. Vegetables will need a lot of sunlight and open spaces.

Soil Tips

Preparing the soil is a very important aspect of planting vegetable gardens. It doesn't matter whether you plan to raise vegetables in a small plot of land or in a plant box. Soil can be categorized as sandy or clay-like, with silt being a fine mixture of both sand and clay.

Ideally, when preparing your soil, it should be 40% silt, 40% sand, and 20% clay. To test it, you can scoop up soil and form it into a ball using your hand. When you poke the soil it should not crumble but it should be sticky enough that it retains its shape even if you don't press it too hard with your hands.

Patience

Planting vegetable gardens require a lot of patience. You have to find what works for you, and experiment on getting the right type of soil for the right type of vegetables. All the hard work will be worth the effort when you reach into your garden and grab a plump, juicy tomato off the vine and bite into it. Once you have experience eating something that grew from a garden that you planted yourself, you can understand that all the hard work you have put into preparing your garden was more then worth the time you have spent.

Growing roses in tropical climates

Growing roses in tropical climates

Roses are one of the most popular Flowers in the world due to their beauty and deep symbolism. It is said that there is a rose of every color for every person, for every emotion. However, besides being popular for these admirable qualities, roses are also well-known to be one of the more difficult flowers to grow. They need very specific conditions to look and stay at their best. Just one missing requirement and a healthy bush of roses can wither and (if not remedied immediately) die.

Roses thrive best in temperate countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, to name a few. In other words, roses prefer mild climates that are not very prone to extreme changes in seasons or temperature. They can't stand it if it's too hot or too cold, and it is only in temperate zones that roses grow most naturally.

Tropical countries, on the other hand, have high temperatures and humidity or moisture content in the air. Examples of tropical countries are the Philippines, Indonesia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Chile and Argentina, to name a few. There are only two seasons: dry, when the temperature reaches record levels during the summer months and wet, when typhoons make their seasonal rounds with heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Given these conditions present in tropical countries, it is no wonder that growing roses have become a tough challenge. Roses are sensitive plants---too much or too little can kill them quite easily. How do rose growers in tropical climates manage to grow them then? Growing roses the natural way requires a lot of manpower and constant attention. The rose grower/s must be on guard all the time to shade the bushes when it becomes too hot, to cover them when it's raining and to have the pesticide always on hand.

In the Philippines, growing roses are better managed in colder localities such as Tagaytay and Baguio, where temperatures are milder than usual. The environment of such places in the Philippines is similar to temperate climate. Thus, the quality of roses grown is markedly better than its counterparts.

Rose growers in tropical countries also use greenhouses in order to grow their roses. In greenhouses, the environment can easily be controlled, thus resulting to less damage on the rose crop and less manpower. The rose grower need not worry about sudden changes in the weather since the flowers are encased in a glass house, protected from pests and excessive rain and heat.

With the help of technology and human ingenuity, roses are now grown all over the world with more ease. Indeed, they have become more beautiful than ever as eternal symbols of love and peace.

The Pink Calima Rose

The Pink Calima Rose

Admiration, n. Our polite recognition of another's resemblance to ourselves.
-Ambrose Bierce

Ambrose Bierce, a 19th century American satirist, was right when he declared that a person's admiration for someone reflects how very much alike they are. Admiring someone means that we want to achieve the same things that the person has achieved in his or her life. It is holding someone in respect and high regard because of certain qualities that we see, or would like to see in us.

However, admiration is an emotion that is hard to verbalize. It can easily be misunderstood for love or desire, two things which can sometimes ruin a purely friendly relationship. It might be because admiration is indeed very close to these two emotions, but it seems that many people find it hard to tell one from the other, If and when f they can, they don't know how to say it.

We want to express our admiration for someone because we might want the person to do better in his or her job. Like they say, a little compliment goes a long way! Letting someone know that he or she is admired can make an uneventful day special. It promotes friendship and camaraderie between two people who has so many things in common in the first place. Communication becomes less formal and along the way, the one who admires and the admired can become fast friends due to the realization that they are not so different from each other at all. Expressing admiration is a first step in building relationships that can be cherished forever.

However, no matter how well intended, expressing admiration for a person can be very awkward. Some people tend to be really shy and do not have much confidence in their verbal skills. Good thing is that there's an easy way to say “I Admire You”---with the help of flowers!

Light pink roses convey admiration to the person without getting the words and the signals mixed up. Give your idol a bunch of Calimas to let him or her know that you appreciate their hard work or whatever qualities they have that you hold in high regard. It's simple: visit the website of Island Rose, choose Calimas, fill in the necessary information for payment and delivery, and wait for a few days and voila! You have fresh light pink roses straight from the farm. Treat your role model to a special gift. It might not be as permanent as a trophy, but giving Calimas to the person you admire can certainly start and cement a lasting friendship.

How to Create a Bird Watching Oasis

How to Create a Bird Watching Oasis

You have finally created the garden of your dreams. You have glorious, vibrant flowers and greenery rising from the earth, colorful stakes, perhaps a running fountain - in short, a beautiful oasis to which you can escape and appreciate nature's finest. However, a garden is not complete until Mother Nature makes her contribution. Chirping birds and bright, vivid butterflies create a cheerful atmosphere and enhance the already-stunning garden area. Bird watching from your backyard is one of the most fun and rewarding experiences, and should not be neglected. Whether a gardening enthusiast or just an animal lover, it's easy to attract wildlife to your backyard.

Why do I want to attract birds to my backyard?

Not only is bird watching fun and exciting, but watching the lively little birds flit around your garden and listening to their happy chirps is uplifting. You will feel relaxed and content by simply looking out your window. On the other hand, when you have a stressful day, watching the birds can take your mind off that stress and center you. Over time, you'll learn their personalities and relationships, and they'll feel like an extension of your home.

Personal pleasure aside, creating a haven for birds in your backyard is excellent for the environment. In cities and suburban areas, there are fewer natural nesting areas available to the bird population. By creating a nesting area in your backyard, you can provide the birds with a comfortable territory.

How do I attract the birds?

It can be as simple as hanging a feeder in the garden or outside a window or as elaborate as installing a bird neighborhood. If you choose the latter, provide a wide variety of nesting areas placed far enough apart to give each family its space. There are some great products out there to enhance the garden, from edible bird houses and decorative bird baths to deluxe stackable bird houses designed to hold an entire colony of birds. If traditional bird houses do not fit your garden or your taste, there are ornamental bird houses to fit any preference and still provide the same haven to birds. Help the birds stay warmer in cooler temperatures with a heated bird bath. You can even combine these elements with perches and bird feeders for an area that is truly home to the birds. The possibilities are endless, and with every addition you'll attract more birds.

If you want to pique the interest of a particular species, fill bird feeders with food labeled specifically for that species. You can also find birdhouses made to be pleasing to certain varieties. If you create several separate areas for the birds, you can invite many different species, all enjoyable. Attract wildlife other than birds; there are some great sites out there that have a comprehensive collection of garden accessories that attract birds, bats, squirrels, and butterflies.

Imagine the scenario: you go to sit in your garden with your favorite book. It is sunny and warm outside with a nice, cool breeze. You set your sweet iced tea on the patio table and notice the beautiful birds darting in and out of the branches, playing tag with one another. The soothing noises of their musical chirps will accompany your reading and create the perfect getaway (without you having to actually go anywhere). By creating a haven for the birds, you'll create a garden oasis for yourself.
